The Drew League began in 2009 and has since evolved into a regular summer league for high school basketball players from throughout the country. Some of the top players in the league are Alvin Lewis, George Thomas, LeBron James, and Chaniel Smiley. But who was behind this phenomenally successful league?


Summer basketball is played in the Drew League. Alvin Lewis created it in 1973. His ambition was to establish a program in which young people could learn life skills through basketball.


Aside from being a basketball league, it has served as a model for community development. Players from many walks of life congregate to practice. Companies like Spalding and Dick's Sporting Goods sponsor some of the league's events.


There have also been a number of noteworthy celebrities who have appeared in the Drew League. Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, James Harden, and Kevin Durant are among them. Steve Blake, Byron Scott, and Brandon Jennings are among the NBA players who have participated in the league.

The Drew League's commissioner, Chaniel Smiley, is the first female to occupy the post. She is a native of Watts, California, and has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. She joined the league in 1985 and helped it develop into a 10-team organization.


The Drew League has been running for nearly 40 years and has produced a lot of outstanding players. NBA players such as Kobe Bryant, James Harden, and Paul Pierce have all graced the court at the Drew.


The Drew League's mission is to assist young people in creating relationships via basketball. As a result, the league has collaborated with a number of groups, like CrossOvr Collective, to undertake culturally relevant programs. This is accomplished through brand collaborations.


There's no better spot to play a pro-am basketball game this weekend than Los Angeles' legendary Drew League. For the first time since 2011, LeBron James will return to the NBA.
